Kap Yan celebrated its 4th Annual Film Festival in April. Students and staff were treated to a week of screenings of movies and documentaries produced by the Filmmaking Group and the Campus TV Reporters. The week finished with the annual Awards Ceremony, which recognises excellence in skills such as screenwriting, investigative journalism, presentation and acting.
Festival drummer, Casper, opened the ceremony with a stirring fanfare, which was followed by the angelic tones of an a cappella performance of the theme song from Echoes of the Rainbow. The ceremony was hosted by Form 4 students Carmen, Sophie and Jonathan. Jonathan was, coincidentally, the winner of last year's "Best Actor" award.
Festival Director Mr Sanderson introduced the Festival, saying "with an array of genres and a field of moods, intriguing plots, outlandish costuming, coloured pencil worlds, and memorable journalistic and acting skills, Kap Yan filmmakers continue to be at the forefront of innovation".
Festival Patron Ms Jolanta Karcewski, an expert in film education, spoke on how "Anyone can be a filmmaker", looking at the lives of famous directors. Ms Karcewski was wearing a white coat and black trousers, perfectly matching Mr Sanderson's suit. Her dangling silver earrings and a long, feather boa added a touch of elegance to the occasion.
The first award was for Most Popular Trailer. Students, parents and teachers were encouraged to view the trailers on eClass Intranet in the days leading up to the festival and vote for their favourite. The Form 4 action-drama Turning Point took the prize, although Forgotten Memories and Who Knows Who Dies also polled well.
Next came the Technical and Artistic Awards. The judges were the teachers responsible for Campus TV: Mr Lam, Ms Chan, Mr Chan, Ms Soon, Mr Yeung, Mr Chiang and Mr Sanderson. Footage from the nominated films was screened before the results were announced. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and expectation, with photographers falling over each other in a scramble to get the best shots of the winners' smiles.
The Genre Awards were no less exciting, given the intense competition and high standard of student work.
Mr Wan followed, announcing the award for "Best Poster", giving an expert analysis of the design elements via a multimedia presentation.
Kenny of 1C made his mark in school filmmaking history when the judges declared him "Best New Talent" for his performance in the horror film, The Fifth Floor.
Next came the award for "Best Cameo Performance" (by a teacher). Mr Wong was the hot favourite for this popular award judged by the loudest applause. However, the audience exploded into cheers when they saw Mr Kwan's dramatic portrayal of an angry Principal in Who Knows Who Dies. Mr Kwan took the award, but not before Ms Karcewski draped him with her feather boa!
The award for "Best Actor" was taken out by Oscar of 4E for his performance as American-accented Police Chief Ohama, in Turning Point. To Ka Yan took out "Best Actress" for her role as a detective-turned-zombie in the action-horror Kill or Be Killed. Leo Pang was awarded "Best Interviewer" for the documentary Tai O.
"Best Screenplay" went to the drama Who Knows Who Dies and "Best Script" to the documentary Forgotten Memories.
Audience tension grew to a climax as a drumroll preceded the announcement of the Top Film Awards. Turning Point was declared "Best Motion Picture", Tai O< won "Best Documentary" and "Best Interview" went to an interview with our exchange students. The announcements were followed by cheering, congratulations and some audience hysteria. Then the Choir drew the occasion to a close with a colourful performance of Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride, complete with ukulele and hula dancers.
