More than forty students and teachers from Kap Yan Directors’ College took part in a service-learning programme in China at Easter to meet students in Hengyang, Hunan (湖南省衡陽縣). The Programme, in which our students had a real taste of being student teachers when they visited Sanchong primary school(三沖小學) and Yangshan primary school(羊山小學), was fun and rewarding. To show our love and care, we donated two basketball stands, table-tennis tables and a refrigerator to the schools. We also distributed stationery and toys to the students. In order to understand their needs, our teachers visited the schools in December 2017 and discussed the details of the learning programme with the local teachers so as to provide the most suitable services. The programme has served the purpose of promoting educational and cultural exchanges and received positive feedback.
We also visited a local secondary school called Hangyang Diyi Secondary School (衡陽市第一中學), where our students attended lessons together with the local students, through which we learnt more about the school life in Mainland China. We were impressed because the students there were very friendly and eager to share their school life with us. Some local students exchanged contact information with us, so that we can keep in touch after the visit. Although the activity was short, every part of it was run smoothly and we have built a good relationship with the local students.
Last but not least, we travelled to Mount Heng (南嶽衡山) , the Grand Temple of Mount Heng (南嶽大廟) as well as the Shigu Academy (石鼓書院) . Students learnt more about the conservation of natural and cultural heritage in China after the visit.
In short, this programme has strengthened not only our spirit to serve others, but also our sense of responsibility as citizens of the country.
